About the Course

The Intermediate Certificate in Software Testing examination is suitable for those who are engaged in any aspect of software testing. It is the next level of competency in software testing after foundation level.

It examines up to level K4 of the given learning objectives / levels of knowledge.

The topics covered are those which are considered to be essential knowledge for an advanced level test professional, regardless of their specialism (i.e. Test Analysis or Test Management).

A pass in this certificate provides evidence that the candidate has proven analytical ability, having gained knowledge and practical skills in the key topics required for practicing software testing.

Access to the Learntesting virtual learning environment portal is provided for 1-year for all candidates taking this course. Candidates may commence it at any time during the year, but once started they are required to complete it within 90-days.

We recommend that candidates taking this course spend some time in preparation by:

• Some or all of the foundation video to refresh knowledge and terminology that is common to both Foundation and Intermediate syllabi;
• Studying and becoming familiar with the learning objectives and syllabus for ISEB Intermediate.

• To prepare candidates for the examination for the ISEB Intermediate Certificate in Software Testing based on the ISEB syllabus;

The course will cover the following aspects of practical test management:

Testing Fundamentals:

• Review of the Foundation Certificate syllabus; application domains; testing in the lifecycle; the fundamental test process

Reviews:

• The principles of reviews; types of review; using different review types; performing a formal review

Testing and Risk:

• Introduction to risk and risk-based testing; risk management; product risk identification and analysis

Test Management:

• Test policy, test strategy, test plans; entry and exit criteria; estimating techniques; test monitoring; incident management process

Test Analysis:

• Fundamentals of test analysis; test environment requirements; selection of techniques; coverage measures

The Exam

The examination will test candidates' ability to apply testing principles to practical settings, as defined in the syllabus.

To verify that candidates have made the transition in thinking from problem solving at Foundation level, the Intermediate examination uses scenario based questions structured in multiple choice format.

The examination lasts one hour and consists of multiple-choice questions. The pass mark is 60%

Entry Requirements

The entry criteria for candidates taking the Intermediate examination are as follows:

• Candidates must hold the ISEB Foundation Certificate in Software Testing AND either:
• have at least 18 months experience in software testing or
• have completed an ISEB accredited training course for the Intermediate Certificate in Software Testing

The ISEB Intermediate course is also available public or as a private inhouse course.

Next steps

The Holders of the Intermediate Certificate are ideally placed to continue their career development along the ISTQB Advanced qualification route. The Advanced level qualifications which compromise of Test Analyst, Test Manager and Technical Test Analyst.
